Is sitting really harmful?

“Sitting all day is killing us!” I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve read or heard that statement in news articles this year. We all understand that inactivity in general is bad for us, but it’s almost reached fad levels lately to say that “sitting is the new smoking” (that’s another line I’ve seen echoed across many sources). Before you run out and buy that standing desk, let’s look at some of the issues around sitting to see if it really is the killer the media is making it out to be.

Stoplight colors stop overeating

A recent study confirmed something we’ve been trying to teach for a while now. Simply color coding meals by their quality: green for good, yellow for OK, and red for unhealthy reduced calorie consumption by an average of 10 percent (which is quite a lot). That extra 10 percent is what determines whether you maintain your weight or slowly pack on the pounds over the years. Counting calories won’t save your life

Everyone is looking for a magic pill to cure society’s mounting health problems from obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, but a recent review of published studies shows that the solution may be in eating better food rather than trying to lose weight. They have shown that improving the quality of our diets improves our health independent of weight loss and that weight loss through calorie restriction actually does not.
