Fun Fact - Your body doesn't recognize liquid calories

Here is a fun/depressing fact; your body does not recognize liquid calories. To be more specific, your appetite does not recognize that you just consumed hundreds of calories, but all that sugar does spike your insulin and set your body up for fat storage.

One theory on why incidences of obesity are skyrocketing around the world is because of increases in the consumption of sugary beverages like soda, fruit juice, and sports drinks. Normally when people indulge in some type of treat, they feel a sense of satiety (or fullness) so they tend to eat a little bit less later on and the balance of calories consumed and burned stays pretty even. Not so with liquid calories. Research has shown that people can add hundreds or even thousands of calories each day without it really satisfying their appetites.

On a positive note, research has also shown that people can cut out liquid calories pretty easily without it impacting their hunger. Plus cutting liquid calories has been shown to lead to greater weight loss than cutting the equivalent in food calories. This highlights just how detrimental these sugary beverages can be to your health and your waistline.

It is a lot harder to cut out food calories than liquid ones, so if you are looking to make a little change that can make a big difference, try and replace those sugary drinks with diet sodas, plain coffee or tea, or best yet water.
