Sugar really is comforting, but aspartame is not

We’ve all heard of the concept of comfort food. When the stresses of life seem too great, we turn to foods packed with lots of fat and sugar to ease our discomfort. If you’ve ever wondered if this is purely psychological or if there actually is a biological component, an interesting new study explains how sugar does actually reduce stress and how artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, do not.

What foods lead to weight gain over time?

For a while now, I’ve been saying how counting calories doesn’t work and how healthy food choices fill you up without impacting your waistline. A recent study by the Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University confirmed many of the things I’ve been saying. In fact, senior author Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D. and dean of the Friedman School, summed it up nicely when he said, “Our study adds to growing new research that counting calories is not the most effective strategy for long-term weight management and prevention.” However, there were a few findings in there that surprised me, and I wanted to share their findings so you can make better food choices in your own life.

“Diets don’t work.”

Google this phrase and you’ll find all kinds of people espousing the “wisdom” that diets are just wasted effort because they only work in the short term and ultimately lead to greater weight gained once the person inevitably rebounds.
